Mexico specifics
Do you bring your own photo for a Mexican passport?
No, in the normal case. The Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores takes your photo at the appointment, along with fingerprints, iris scan and signature, at passport offices in Mexico and at consulates abroad. The consulate in Vancouver says it plainly, No es necesario traer fotografías, and New York states No se requieren ni fotografías ni fotocopias. The gob.mx page adds that the photo is taken without glasses, with the head fully uncovered, facing forward and with nothing covering the face, so arrive without glasses or a hat.
There is one exception. The SRE's domestic requirements page still says that, de manera extraordinaria, an office may ask for two printed fotografías tamaño pasaporte: color, white background, no glasses, head uncovered, taken within the last 30 days. In August 2026 the SRE told Mexican press that this is an extraordinary requirement for specific cases where an office requests it. If your confirmation asks for photos, the free maker gives you the 35 x 45 mm crop on a 4 x 6 inch sheet; otherwise you do not need it for this document.
Where to print a Mexican passport photo in Mexico
Only relevant if your office asked for printed photos. Any estudio fotográfico knows the format as tamaño pasaporte, 3.5 x 4.5 cm on white. Do not confuse it with tamaño infantil (2.5 x 3 cm), which is for school and other trámites. Prices published by studios on 3 September 2026:
- FOTOS-INN, Mexico City: MXN 100 (2026) for the Pasaporte Mexicano format, ready in about 15 minutes.
- Más Fotos Estudio, Puebla: MXN 150 (2026) for six 35 x 45 mm prints on semi-matte paper.
- Estudio Fotográfico, Cuernavaca: six-print package, white background, 20-minute or next-day service; price not published.
- Fotomás, Monterrey: passport format not listed; visa package MXN 150 (2026).
You can also print the maker's 4 x 6 inch sheet at any photo counter and cut the photos out.
Why the SRE rejects passport photos
- At the counter: glasses, hats or anything covering the face or head are not allowed; the photo is taken without them.
- Printed photos with the face too close (cara muy cerca) or the head too far away (cabeza muy lejos).
- Face or body turned, or a profile shot (rostro de lado, foto de perfil).
- Glasses on (lentes puestos).
- Grey or stained background instead of plain white (fondo gris o manchado).
- Smiling, the head cut off, or a photo older than 30 days.
Official source, verified 3 September 2026
The on-site capture rule comes from the SRE page Trámite de Pasaporte desde el extranjero and the passport pages of the consulates in Vancouver and New York, checked on 3 September 2026. The printed-photo exception and its wording come from the SRE requirements page for passports in national territory, last updated 19 May 2017, and the rejection examples from the Frankfurt consulate's example sheet. The general portal gob.mx/pasaporte lists fees from 1 January 2026 and no photo requirement.

How to make it in 3 steps
- Take or choose a photo. Stand in front of a plain light wall in even light with no shadows, camera at eye level about 2 m away, head and shoulders in frame with space around your head.
- Crop with the head guides. The maker opens preset to the 35 x 45 mm standard with the official 32–36 mm head range marked. Drag and zoom until the crown of your head and your chin sit on the guides, then run the built-in photo check.
- Download. Save the single photo (for online uploads) or the 4 x 6 in print sheet, and print it at any photo shop, pharmacy photo kiosk or at home for the price of a regular photo print.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a Mexican Passport Photo?
35 x 45 mm — 413 x 531 px at 300 DPI. The head must measure 32–36 mm from chin to the top of the head.
What background color does a Mexican Passport Photo need?
Plain white.
Can I take a Mexican Passport Photo at home with my phone?
In most cases, no. The Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores photographs you at the passport office or consulate during your appointment, so a photo you bring on your own is not normally used. If your office asks for printed photos as an exception, use the free maker to crop the 35 x 45 mm size on a plain white background so you have a copy ready for that appointment.
Is this Mexican Passport Photo maker really free and private?
Yes — completely free, with no ads, no watermark and no signup. Unlike photo-booth apps and paid services, your photo is processed entirely in your browser and is never uploaded to any server.
Where can I print my Mexican Passport Photo?
Download the 4 x 6 in (10 x 15 cm) sheet and print it as an ordinary borderless 4 x 6 in (10 x 15 cm) photo at actual size (100%, no scaling) at a photo shop, a pharmacy photo kiosk, an online print service or on a home printer, then cut along the guide lines. You pay only for an ordinary photo print, not a photo-booth service fee. Local examples: FOTOS-INN, Más Fotos Estudio. More detail: Printing passport photos in Mexico.
