Argentina specifics
Do you bring your own photo for an Argentine DNI?
No. When you apply for a new copy of the Documento Nacional de Identidad (DNI) at a RENAPER Centro de Documentación or a Registro Civil, your photo, fingerprints and signature are captured during the trámite. RENAPER's requirements page mentions a medical certificate only for someone who cannot go through the capture of biometric data (foto, huella o firma), and its DNI FAQ describes the 5-to-8-year update as keeping the biometric record (firma, foto y huellas) current. Nothing in the DNI or passport application asks you to upload or hand over a photo.
The foto carnet, or foto 4x4, still matters for other paperwork. Argentine consulates without the digital system ask for two 4 x 4 cm photos, frontal, upper bust, white background, no glasses or hat, and an emergency passport at a consulate needs one. Enrolment in the Policía Federal Argentina asks for two colour 4x4 prints on white, ANAC aeronautical licences ask for one, and the City of Buenos Aires residencia precaria certificate asks for one colour 4x4. Where to print a foto 4x4 in Argentina
Photo shops sell fotos carnet in sets and usually take the picture on the spot; the same counters print a sheet you bring on your phone. Two shops that publish prices:
- Tu Foto Regalo (Buenos Aires) lists ARS 15,000 for 6 fotos carnet in 4x4 or 3x4 on Kodak paper, taken in store.
- TecPic Store (Palermo, Belgrano, Vicente López and Morón) lists ARS 13,500, or ARS 12,555 by bank transfer, for fotos carnet 4x4 on Kodak XtraLife paper; the page does not state how many prints you get.
Other chains did not publish a foto carnet price when checked. Ask for matte or semi-matte paper, which Resolución 169/2011 specifies.
Why RENAPER and consulates reject a foto 4x4
- It is not current. Resolución 169/2011 requires the image to be actual and to show the face faithfully at the time of the request.
- The head is covered. The rule is cabeza totalmente descubierta, with an exception for religious or health reasons only if the main facial features stay visible.
- The background is not a uniform plain white with a matte or semi-matte finish.
- The face has been altered or falsified; the image must be free of alteraciones o falseamientos de las características faciales.
- Glasses or a hat appear in a print that a consulate asked for; those pages say sin anteojos ni sombrero.
- It is not 4 x 4 cm, not frontal, or not half-bust (medio busto).
- For an ANAC licence, a selfie, a filter or accessories will fail; that page asks for a good-quality 4x4 sin accesorios y sin filtros on white, light blue or grey.

Fees from the RENAPER tarifario as read on 3 September 2026: ARS 10,000 for a new DNI copy, ARS 57,000 for DNI al instante, ARS 100,000 for a regular passport and ARS 330,000 for pasaporte al instante, with a tariff change noted on 6 March 2026. RENAPER publishes no head-height or expression rule. Disposición 55/2026 redesigned the card from 1 February 2026 without changing photo rules.
