Brazil specifics
Do you bring your own photo for a Brazilian passport?
For most applicants, no. The Polícia Federal issues the passaporte comum and captures your biometrics in the service booth at your appointment: a facial photograph and your fingerprints. The PF's own FAQ on the foto 5x7 says that from age 5 you do not need to bring a photo because one is captured on the day. Instrução Normativa 173/2020, article 47, sets this out and gives two exceptions. A child under 5 is exempt from electronic capture if the parent presents a recent colour print, 5 x 7 cm, on a white background, that fully identifies the child; the child must still attend. If the equipment fails, PF may collect biometrics manually and ask any applicant for the same 5 x 7 cm print. The online form and fee payment involve no photo upload.
So the tool is useful in two cases: preparing a compliant 5 x 7 cm print for a child under 5, and keeping a spare print in your bag in case manual collection is needed. For an adult renewal inside Brazil you can skip the photo entirely.
Where to print a foto 5x7 in Brazil
Shops advertising fotos 3x4 e 5x7 para documentos exist in most Brazilian cities, and many are Kodak Express franchises. Prices are set locally and are rarely published online. Examples that were checked:
- Foto Art, a document-photo shop in Salvador, lists R$ 25,00 for either 9 prints of 3x4 or 2 prints of 5x7 with same-day service (undated page, viewed September 2026).
- FotoRegistro, an online print lab, lists a 10 x 15 cm print at R$ 0,49 (promotional price shown in 2026; regular R$ 0,79). The tool's 4 x 6 inch sheet is 10 x 15 cm, so upload it as one photo and cut out the 5 x 7 cm frames yourself.
- Imagem Universal, a Kodak Express shop in Nova Friburgo, offers document photos but publishes no price.
Whatever you choose, the print must be colour, exactly 5 x 7 cm and on a white background.
Why the Polícia Federal rejects photos
- The child's face is partially covered by accessories, ornaments or adornments (apetrechos, enfeites ou adornos).
- The print no longer identifies the child because too much time has passed since it was taken.
- The child's eyes are closed. PF accepts closed eyes only for a newborn.
- The print is not 5 x 7 cm, not colour, not recent or not on a white background, the conditions in article 47 of IN 173/2020.
- For the photo captured in the booth, PF's FAQ warns that coloured contact lenses that change eye colour are not accepted under ANAC and ICAO standards, and that hair must not cover the outline of the face or the eyebrows; the attendant cannot step back to fit a voluminous hairstyle into the frame.

The standard fee is R$ 257,25, or up to R$ 514,50 in specific cases, per the PF fee page updated 20 October 2025. PF publishes no head-height, glasses or expression rule for the 5 x 7 print: only size, colour, white background, recency and a fully identifiable face.
