Passport Seva Kendras in India capture the photo live at the counter, but applications through Indian missions abroad (renewal, Tatkal, minor passports) require printed 35 x 45 mm photos — typically two to four copies. One 4 x 6 inch sheet from this app yields six.
India specifics
Do you bring your own photo for an Indian passport?
For most applicants, no. When you apply for an Indian passport (Hindi: पासपोर्ट, handled under the पासपोर्ट सेवा programme) you attend a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK), a Post Office PSK or a Passport Office. The Passport Seva FAQ says that for applicants above the age of 4 years, photographs will be captured at the PSK, POPSK or PO itself, and the instruction booklet states that a photograph is not required for applications submitted there.
You need your own photo in three cases. A child below 4 years must bring one passport size photograph (पासपोर्ट आकार की तस्वीर): colour, 45 mm x 35 mm, white background, face filling 80 to 85 percent of the frame. If you file at a District Passport Cell, Speed Post Centre or Citizen Service Centre, you paste one 4.5 cm x 3.5 cm colour photo on the form. The MEA guideline for ICAO compliant photographs also sets a 630 x 810 pixel image for uploading, used by the GPSP 2.0 mission portals. Where to print an Indian passport photo in India
A print is only needed for a child under 4, a non-PSK filing or a diplomatic application. Download the 4 x 6 inch sheet and have it printed on photo paper; the booklet warns that a photograph in computer print is not accepted, so avoid an inkjet on plain paper. Online printers, with 2026 prices from their own pages:
- Printo lists 35 x 45 mm passport photos on glossy paper, minimum order 20 prints, priced at INR 212.40.
- GiftKida prints 35 x 45 mm photos from INR 79, plus INR 50 for a prepared background.
- Photojaanic sells a set of sixteen prints on 300 GSM gloss paper; the price loads at checkout and was not published on the page we read.
Why Passport Seva rejects photos
- Dark background, uniform, or eyes hidden behind coloured or dark glasses on a pasted photo.
- Black and white prints, computer prints, or a picture cut out of a group photograph.
- Shadows on the face or background, hair across the eyes, or glare on eyeglasses (the upload guideline says to remove them).
- Face not filling 80 to 85 percent of the frame, head off centre or tilted, mouth open, or a blurred image.
- Photo altered by software, red eye, or an upload that is not 630 x 810 pixels.
- A photo stamped by a post office or DPC, listed as objection OBJ02 because it cannot be scanned into the booklet.
- Head coverings other than for religious reasons, or a photo that is torn, creased, marked or signed.

The rules above come from the Ministry of External Affairs Passport Seva portal: the Passport Seva FAQ, the Application Form Instruction Booklet V3.0, the Guidelines for Capturing Photographs for Minors below 4 years, and the Guidelines for ICAO Compliant Photographs (630 x 810 pixels, white background, unaltered). The ICAO guideline publishes no JPEG file size limit, so kilobyte figures seen elsewhere are not from the MEA. Missions on GPSP 2.0, which began issuing chip e-passports in Abu Dhabi on 28 October 2025, take the ICAO compliant photo as an upload before the appointment.
